Americans Consider Affordable Housing a Top Issue

A Zogby International poll commissioned by the Housing America 2007 partners found that nine out of ten Americans cite affordable housing as a high priority, and more than half believe housing policy with respect to the provision of affordable housing is on the wrong track.

The poll results underscore America's affordable housing crisis. One-third of respondents cited having a decent, affordable place to live as their number one priority. The poll also shows that affordable housing will affect the way Americans vote. Seventy-five percent said that presidential candidates' ideas for providing more affordable housing were important in determining for whom they would vote. Nearly seven in ten said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who had articulated a detailed plan for providing affordable housing.

In short, affordable housing matters. See the full poll results below for more details.

Quality affordable housing is needed so desperately everywhere.
We have an entirely different kind of homeless population that no government entity is prepared to handle. With the foreclosure crisis it will not get better for a while.

We will reap what we sow.
If we aid struggling households we will create stability and allow hope to flourish. If we ignore their plight we will harvest distress and dysfunction. Yes, many of these struggling but proud Americans will pull themselves up by their bootstraps. However many can't or won't make it without our help.

Affordable housing is definitely needed in our town. Small towns and cities all over America are suffering from the lack of affordable housing. In rural Kansas housing is a critical issue among the elderly, handicap and disabled. Most people live on set incomes. I encourage all people to consider affordable housing top priority.

Our Town has an increasing elderly population which includes the young disabled. It is also becoming increasingly difficult for lower wage earners to afford any kind of decent lifestyle. Without continued support for afforadable housing, options for this segement of our population will be practically nil. We have enough money to send to almost every country on earth even those that threaten us, so it is time we take care of home..........

In Orange County, California it is extremely critical that affordable housing becomes a priority. Recently cities have developed an over abundance of high-end housing which is far too expensive for low-income families. Affordable housing would create that much needed balance for everyone.

Something has gone terribly wrong in our priorities. Our country cannot stand proud if we neglect to provide decent, affordable housing to our elderly, disabled and families. It is time for the federal government to recommit to housing this nation's poor. We do our best in the rural area to house our less fortunate citizens, but we need funding to keep up the good work.

We need to fund affordable mixed income workforce housing in livable neighborhoods of Choice for all. Subsidizing continued urban sprawl and leaving the poor, elderly and disabled, economically segregated in central cities is not acceptable. We have laws that portend to gurantee "Equal Opportunities For All". Congress needs to support the mission.

This is sad information. I do not know how our youth in the future will ever be able to afford housing in areas where the jobs are. Maybe it is really time to ask why the wages of middle and low income Americans have not increased enough to allow them to afford housing. It is shameful that so many are really really rich in our society, and that they are so unwilling to share with their brother and sister Americans. It is also frustrating to me why so many Americans vote against their own economic self-interest. Our voters are too easily diverted and concerned with "wedge" issues that do not make any difference in their own lives. I do not understand why voters in America keep focusing on Gay Marriage, Guns, illegals, prayer in school, etc. and continue to vote those in office who give tax breaks to the rich, business subsidies, farm subsidies, send poor kids to fight wars where they can make money, and never give the average or poor worker a break. I only hope that one day soon the average American will rise up and ask their politicans to address real issues and give them some of the benefits that the rich get in this country.

The staggering cost of housing has push the opportunity for homeownership beyond the reach of many Americans. This same trend is now spilling over into the residential rental market. Putting an additional strain on public and private resources. This situation is slowly creating a new underclass "The Working Poor". HUD's new mandates is forcing the HA to do more with less funding. Greater latitude and more flexible HUD regulations would go a long way.

We need more funds in order to serve the low income and the moderate income families. I see many people everyday struggling to get by. Some cannot even afford a deposit on an apartment or house, let alone the monthly rental amount. I see many families where the children have all moved back home with mom and dad. Sometimes 7 or 8 persons to a houdehold that is constructed for 4 persons.

The cost of housing has increased while federal CDBG and HOME funds has decreased, making it very difficult to produce affordable housing at a time when it is critically needed. Every day, we come across families staying in motels, shelters and moving from place to place with no stability for themselves and their families. And these are people who are working! We need more funding to correct this problem.

Until you have faced a family who is about to become homeless and had to tell them you have nothing available you won't truly comprehend the crisis we are facing in affordable housing.
More and more these are working famiies, the elderly and the handicapped. The majority of Housing Authorities have wait lists that are YEARS long. We need Congress to do the right thing and provide more funding to address the growing need.

Elected officials and government professionals are gradually waking up to the fact that affordable and accessible homes for working familes represent a wage subsidy for local public and private employers, and a perpetual asset in their economic and community development strategies.

Housing stock that is both affordable and situated near the workplace serves as a recruitment and retention tool, reduces costs for transportation infrastructure and safety, and can reduce air pollution. It can also increase job and school attendance and productivity.

The direction and type of residential development in each community can represent either a long-term net gain or net drain. The direction and review of development should be informed by local needs and strategic planning; not solely for the short-term gain of investors or developers at the expense of the larger community.

It's about setting reasonable 'rules of etiquette' that allow for healthy economic, social and environmental gains for everyone involved or impacted by development and growth.

Cheers.

We have gotten our priorities all messed up. We spend millions of dollars to study why a certain insect lives in a specific area and make sure its home is preserved, while so many of our people have no where to live! We waste millions every year on things that are of no value. We let millions of dollars be misappropriated and misspent that was designated to help Hurricane Katrina victims with little accounting by anyone to see that the money went to those in need. We spent millions of dollars on mobile homes for hurricane victims that have set for months and months and used by no one, while paying rent on the property to store them. This waste is a shame! We spend millions and millions every year sending aid to countries that hate America, but we let our own people go hungry and homeless. We make our elderly have to choose between food and medicine. We let our old people and children and those living in poverty suffer and those who are more fortunate do not have a clue what it is like to "walk in their shoes! We live in a small town, but housing is a problem. We have a high proportionate number of those who are homeless, without jobs, and no where to turn. Life for these Americans is dismal. Affordable, public housing is necessary and needed. Money appropriated to this area will not be wasted!

EVERY JOB NEEDS A HOME TO GO TO . . .
People who work hard at a career whether it be a janitor, grocery store clerk, auto mechanic, or an accountant, all need a safe and secure place to start from, and that can be found in the American Dream — the HOME. Whether it be as a homeowner or a renter, a HOME is the foundation for enjoying the most basic of all human experiences. Truly great people, families, communities and countries are created when its individual people feel safe and secure in their personal life and that starts with a good home. Providing a home for every individual in our community cannot be overlooked. It is the responsibility of everyone in the community to do all that is necessary to ensure that every citizen has an adequate home to go to at the end of the day. When homes are the major focus everyone benefits and community assets grow, community services become more affective, neighborhoods are more safe and secure, and life just gets better for everyone. Someone once said “You can get anything you want out of life if you help enough other people get what they want.” How about we all work hard to get housing needs moved up to a more prominent position in our order of priorities and reap the benefits. Just my thoughts . . .
