Hopefully Congress will listen - if enough people speak out - please help get the Need for Affordable Housing message out to all Americans.
Beverley Kingsley, 1517 Juniper Lane, Machesney Park, IL, 61115, Winnebago County Housing Authority. Affordable housing is a necessity in our area. We not only have a large percentage of low income people, we, like many communities have a growing population of elderly and disabled people. Without affordable low income housing this population is going to strain the public and private resources of in a much more expensive way than if they had access to appropriate pleasant affordable housing. For those who do not have family to take them in or help them we are going to create an entirely different kind of homeless population that no government entity is prepared to handle.

My hope is that Congress will listen and be open to the need for affordable housing initiatives in our country. The number of low income families needing housing assistance is only growing as evidenced by the large number of applicants (1,200) who applied when we accepted Section 8 applications earlier this year.

The Housing Industry is being hit with serious cuts in funding. As a small Housing Authority we will cease to exist and will not be able to continue to provide decent, safe, and affordable Housing to our community. How can we continue housing our current residents when the program is being cut to a point that only one parttime maintenance person can be hired for seven dollars and hour, and one part time Exective Director. The one part time Executive Director is expected to be the Director, inspector, secretary, CFP coordinator, resident initiative coordinator and so on. The Director is expected to do everything on twenty hours a week. That is a joke. Services to the residents and community are being cut. Aren't these the persons we should be providing decent, safe, and sanitory housing to. On the budgets we are being given this is impossible.

Affordable housing ("shelter") is a necessity just like food and clothing not a privilege. This should be a priority in every community. It should be a congressional priority. Congress should not continually reduce
funding. There is no production program. The promise of paperwork reduction and deregulation has long since passed. We need to get "our house" in order in this country.
We can find money to fund the war, but we cannot find money to house our Americans who so desparately need it. It's time we do what America usually does not, and that is to help our own!!

I agree with the Housing America Campaign goal. Metro D.C. has a housing crisis for its working force below media income levels. The roads are choked with people driving more than one hour to commute to slightly more affordable locations. Public policy and funding must be made available to stem the bleeding.
Stan Gaither, Executive Director

Low income housing has been a blessing in our community since 1961. Lately we are seeing money cut from domestic programs, such as Public Housing, and more money being spent on foreign programs. We strive to provide decent, safe and sanitary housing and we continue to see the need grow. We believe that reduced funding in low income housing will result in increased expenses in areas such as healthcare, crime, welfare and the elderly/disabled. Individuals must have affordable housing in order to become productive members of society.
Affordable Housing is at the core of the American Dream; a place to raise your family and support your community; it must be preserved and supported.

The Federal government has many issues to deal with but people in positions of our nature see first hand the condition of housing for low-income individuals in our country. HUD funds are cut because Congress has other ideas for Federal tax dollars - Housing Authorities are required to operate on 16% less operating funding than what HUD itself determines we SHOULD be operating with - capital grant funds are cut every year - we lose our bonus money - BUT we have to meet our deadlines and perform as HUD regulations prescribe - and in the end it is a detriment to the very people we are required to be helping. Someone, somewhere has to take a stand to take care of America first.
It is unconscionable that the world's only superpower should permit vast numbers of its citizens to be underhoused and homeless and not do more about easing the growing gap of haves and have nots.

I live in Public Housing in Springfield, Mo. These people here the staff & Executor Director have worked very hard for all of us residents around 9,000, & for the homeless in our community. I couldn't live without this beautiful apartment, & I tell my family, that I am spoiled. I have a pet, no utilities to pay, maitenance, yard crew. I wish President Bush could get his priorrities in order, he might be able to if he was hoemless. It is up to us in many ways & I will try & forward this to some co.s I know. 750,000 homeless, that is staggering & a blight on USA, but not because of Public Houing. I am grateful, & appreciate being able to say so. I will be more supportive in the way know how. I so appreciate the HAS, they work wihtout pay raises, they are kind & compassionate the staff, & they are definately, overworked and underpaid, another blight on USA. they have their own families & problems that they never show, or take out on any of us residents. They are incredibly fair, and careful for/of us. For them I wish I could do more. & for Public Housing, & i will try. Kimmie and dixie (my doggie)

Small towns and cities all over America are suffering from the lack of affordable housing. Our small town in N.E. Ga. is no different. Our conventional public housing is deteriorating and getting in disrepair more with each passing year. Congress does not fund the capitol fund program for repairs adequately, and with operating subsidy being funded at 84 percent in 2006-2007, we have now been underfunded for over 10 years running. We ask that all industry leaders, both private and public, place affordable housing as a top priority. They should also develop ways and the means to build this affordable housing.

Afforable housing has been ignored too long. Unfunded preventative & longterm capital needs has allowed a huge public investment to deteriorate significantly. Obviously the private sector would never have allowed this to happen.

As a single mother who struggled to make ends meet on a teachers salary, I can't tell you how many hundreds of times (literally) I have cried and panicked over not being able to afford a decent place to live. I have been on the verge of homelessness regularly, becauswe affordable housing seems to be an oxymoron. Decent housing has thus far taken nearly half my take home salary. If rents aren't affordable, we can't meet those other necessary needs, like food, and clothing, and medical care. Please consider making decent housing more affordable for all people!
