Sign on to the Housing America 2007 Petition!

More than 70 years ago, this nation committed itself to providing a decent home and suitable living environment for all Americans. To date, this promise has not been fully realized. With renewed public support and enlightened leadership, we are committed to reestablishing this objective as a national priority.

We believe this is a critical national objective that can only be met through an unwavering federal commitment; an ongoing ability on the part of state and local government to fill in the gaps created by the limits of federal assistance; a dedicated, mission-driven not-for-profit community, and a forward-thinking private sector.

Today, 15.6 million households pay more than half of their income for housing; homeless estimates are nearly 750,000. America is the best housed nation on earth, yet for a growing and more economically-diverse number of families, children, seniors and persons with disabilities, affordable housing in quality communities is illusionary. As individuals, organizations, and a nation, we must do more and do better to help those least able to help themselves.

Safe, decent and affordable housing is pivotal in our society—beyond providing basic shelter, it positively impacts the economy and improves the quality of our environment.

Over the years, the public and private sectors have learned much about the cost-effective provision of affordable housing. Together we know what works, what does not work, and why, yet unmet housing needs in our communities persist. Each in our own way, using the resources available to us, we recommit ourselves today to a national goal of meeting the housing needs of all Americans.

To sign on to the petition, please click on "Comments" below and leave a comment with your name, zip code, address and, if you wish, organization. The signers will eventually be compiled into hard copy format and delivered to members of Congress. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Barron at mbarron -at- nahro.org.

Homelessness is unacceptable and it is a solvable problem. It just needs a serious commitment, and revision of policies that make it difficult for many individuals to access housing. For those of us who have experienced homelessness, we have the answers. We know very well what could have been done to prevent us from becoming homeless; we know what works and what does not work. So work with us.

Affordable housing (for entry level workforce citizens) is becoming more difficult in our community. Very few young families can afford our community and senior citizens have very few options. We are in the process redeveloping our public housing and looking into new options for maintaining affordable housing. A community must have housing for the workforce to be viable. We must renew and increase the funds for affordable housing.

There is nothing more important than to have an affordable mortgage or rent payment for most families. Affordable housing will stabilize communities and improve the economic conditions as families have more disposible income for products and services. It time to act, we need to create affordabel housing units accross America.

We have large families in the Fargo/Moorhead area of ND. It is not conducive to renting because they can pay anywhere from $800-$1200 a month renting and it would be much easier for them to purchase a home that would support their family size. Joy Kipp, Fargo Housing

Not much has changed over the last 10 years. Low-income people continue to struggle to find decent, affordable housing. In fact, one could argue that the housing situation is worse now that it was 10 years ago with skyrocketing housing prices and wages that don't keep pace with inflation or the cost of living. Why can't we learn from the many successful models that less industrialized countries and European markets have constructed. To be the richest country in the Nation and not have people properly housed is a disgrace.

We are again entering the winter where thousands of children, women and men, many of them veterans are at risk not only from the dangers of living in the streets, but from the weather conditions. Shame on us, this rich country must provide housing for all Americans!
