Sign on to the Housing America 2007 Petition!

More than 70 years ago, this nation committed itself to providing a decent home and suitable living environment for all Americans. To date, this promise has not been fully realized. With renewed public support and enlightened leadership, we are committed to reestablishing this objective as a national priority.

We believe this is a critical national objective that can only be met through an unwavering federal commitment; an ongoing ability on the part of state and local government to fill in the gaps created by the limits of federal assistance; a dedicated, mission-driven not-for-profit community, and a forward-thinking private sector.

Today, 15.6 million households pay more than half of their income for housing; homeless estimates are nearly 750,000. America is the best housed nation on earth, yet for a growing and more economically-diverse number of families, children, seniors and persons with disabilities, affordable housing in quality communities is illusionary. As individuals, organizations, and a nation, we must do more and do better to help those least able to help themselves.

Safe, decent and affordable housing is pivotal in our society—beyond providing basic shelter, it positively impacts the economy and improves the quality of our environment.

Over the years, the public and private sectors have learned much about the cost-effective provision of affordable housing. Together we know what works, what does not work, and why, yet unmet housing needs in our communities persist. Each in our own way, using the resources available to us, we recommit ourselves today to a national goal of meeting the housing needs of all Americans.

To sign on to the petition, please click on "Comments" below and leave a comment with your name, zip code, address and, if you wish, organization. The signers will eventually be compiled into hard copy format and delivered to members of Congress. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Barron at mbarron -at- nahro.org.

The Commission and managaement team of the Housing Authority of Grant County (Washington) support the Housing America Campaign. Since 2001 we've seen a nation-wide increase in poverty with no material increase in the resources to ameliorate the causes or effects. A strong commitment to affordable housing is the most effective way to help those left out of our economic mainstream.

I realize that this is a "free" market, but something must be done to cap the amount of rent that a landlord is able to ask for. Some rental amounts are simply ridiculous but when you need a place for your family to live you must either come up with the money, get assistance (if that is even posible with the inadequate funding of the HCV Program), or be homeless. Some choice.

In our town young school teachers, librarians, firemen/women, police, city employees are mostly priced out of the housing market. And we are a city of only about 30,000 people! Where are hard-working young people, the disabled, the pension-less elderly to live?

I have had two friends leave Cape Cod where they have lived for years because they could no longer afford housing. One of them has moved several times since then and she is 60 years old. Another friend is living in a winter rental and has no idea what she will do when June arrives. These are all women over 50. This area has become unaffordable unless you already own a home. This situation is unacceptable.

Rents are increasing to where families are unable to rent due to the new payment standards and 40% cap. With HUD reducing voucher monies and penalities for not being leased up 95%,this hurts both the PHA and the families. THe commitment to providing affodable housing has been abandoned.

I support the Housing America Campaign. Affordable housing needs to become a priority in our nation. Communities are building new homes that are unreachable for middle income families. They want to cater to upper income families to increase their tax base. We need to focus on the big picture and develop communities for everyone.

Only 12% of households in our County can afford to purchase median priced homes and nearly 50% pay more than 40% of their income for rent! This at a time when housing program(s) are having funding reduced and increasing regulations. The homeless population is more and more including the working households, not just fixed incomes. We need increased funding and commitment to affordable housing programs.

There are over 5,000 renter occupied housing units in Franklin County, Washington. Of these, zero percent are affordable to very low income households. Over the last two years, the continuous reductions in HUD assistance has forced our agency to reduce the number of families we are able to serve, culminating in a loss of 20 families per year. A failing economy forces many families into homelessness each year; we shouldn't continue to allow Congressional funding reductions to terminate "already assisted" families forcing them into homelessness as well!
