More than 70 years ago, this nation committed itself to providing a decent home and suitable living environment for all Americans. To date, this promise has not been fully realized. With renewed public support and enlightened leadership, we are committed to reestablishing this objective as a national priority.
We believe this is a critical national objective that can only be met through an unwavering federal commitment; an ongoing ability on the part of state and local government to fill in the gaps created by the limits of federal assistance; a dedicated, mission-driven not-for-profit community, and a forward-thinking private sector.
Today, 15.6 million households pay more than half of their income for housing; homeless estimates are nearly 750,000.
Safe, decent and affordable housing is pivotal in our society—beyond providing basic shelter, it positively impacts the economy and improves the quality of our environment.
Over the years, the public and private sectors have learned much about the cost-effective provision of affordable housing. Together we know what works, what does not work, and why, yet unmet housing needs in our communities persist. Each in our own way, using the resources available to us, we recommit ourselves today to a national goal of meeting the housing needs of all Americans.

Syracuse, NY has a shotage of visitable houses. Ten, twenty, thirty years ago people with disablities were kept hidden. No one knew if you had a person in the family that was disable. It was hidden, they were kept in a room when company was coming. More and more family are opening there homes to memebers who are disable. Not putting them in placement. We want our family at home. More homes need to be accessible to the physically disable as well as the mentally disable. Goverment Funds that are used for housing should be spearhead to develop homes that is multigenerational. Homes which are visitable. Meaning if I had a Little person, wheelchair bound person, walker bound child or adult, mobility impaired person could come visit with a minimual strees into get into where I live. The baby boomers are becoming of age. More of us will need accessability as we age. Home owners need to be able to get funding to help them make there home accessbile for themselves and or others. Affordable, visitable, accessable housing is not the cure all but it is a great step in the right directions. Realtors, homebuilders need to start looing at this.

We currently have a 18-24 month waiting list for our Section 8 Housing Assistance Program. There definitely is a need for more affordable housing in our area for families, elderly and disabled. The need grows more and more but the funding to help these families shrinks. We support Housing America 2007.

The provision of decent, safe, and affordable housing to all Americans should be the Federal Government's number one priority.
The development of viable communities by:
•providing decent housing
•providing suitable living environments
•expanding economic opportunities
•alleviating the problems of excessive rent burdens
•preventing homelessness
•eliminating deteriorating housing stock
...are all ways to accomplish this.
Affordable rental and homeownership programs can and will lead to the American Dream.

How can we expect the children of America to grow up as responsible, contributing, and law abiding citizens without the stable structure of a home? We, as a country, need to take responsiblity for the conditions in this country regarding our poor and homeless. If nothing else, think of the children, disabled, and elderly. I live in the New York City Area working and between my husband and myself, we work 4 jobs. We have 3 children and 45% of our income goes to rent. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to purchase a house but that is unfortunately, just a dream. We continue to pay rent to landlords who increasingly raise rents for profit. These landlords also enjoy lucrative tax write-offs at the generosity of our federal government. My husband is a veteran and I remember when the government built affordable housing for WWII veterans and their families. It seems that we are becoming more and more a country of greed and our politicians are in on the act.

Just yesterday a young man of my acquaintance told me he had to move, because he couldn't afford to live here any more. This is so sad. Soon there will be no young singles left here.
My organization is Reston Citizens Association, which has promoted affordable housing for several years. I am the Vice-President.
I wanted to express my individual support for the petition.
Affordable housing has been a top priority for Arlington, VA for a number of years. On July 9, 2007, the County Board passed a resolution stating in part: “the Arlington County Board hereby endorses H.R. 2895, the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act of 2007, and urges the timely passage of this legislation to help alleviate the affordable housing shortage that exists in localities throughout Virginia and the Nation.”
The Washington Area Housing Partnership, chaired by an Arlington County Board member, is actively pursuing a public education campaign in the Washington, DC area.

This is the most important challenge facing our community. Even in one of the richest counties in the US, we have so many people whose lives are in crisis and chaos because they face losing their housing or finding affordable housing. People can manage their lives and contribute back as engaged citizens when they don't have worry about a roof over their heads.

We provide short term assistance to families in fairfax County Virginia while they are waiting for public assistance. This allows the family stability, thus making it possible to find a good job with a decent income. Homeless families have no base from which to operate thus making it more unlikely to stabilize and support themselves. Affordable housing must be a priority for every elected official and every American!

America owes it to all their citizens to be able to avail themselves of the three basic needs: food, clothing and shelter. It can do a better job in the area of affordable housing. The Northern Virginia area is pricing middle America out.
Housing is an urgent need. We need to make up the gap between what it costs to produce decent, affordable housing and what people can afford to pay. Support adequate funding for affordable housing.

There will always be a need for decent rental housing. The foreclosure rate in our area has increased dramatically. Homeownership is a worthwhile goal but it is just as important and worthwhile to perserve our hugh investment in public housing. Not all Americans are capable of being homeowners. The housing industry has changed dramatically in the twenty years I have been employed in housing. Less funding and more micro-management, more requirements, is taking away from our main goal-
to help those here at home find decent, affordable and safe housing. It's time to end this ongoing crisis and start putting "people" first. I fully support this petition.
The federal government needs to prioritize affordable housing. It has been ignored for too long.

Affordable housing is a CRITICAL NEED In Orange County, CA where I live. As a single mother, I personally experienced homelessness 3-1/2 years ago when the home I had rented for 12 years was sold, and I discovered that it was $1,000 below market rent. This made it impossible for me to rent an adequate home for my family. I now work for the County in Homeless Prevention, making very good money, yet I still can't afford the kind of home I lived in back then. It took me two years, three months, and three shelters to even make it into low-income housing. Every day I hear from people who are desperate to find affordable housing, but it just doesn't exist. Please support affordable housing!

Virtually every local housing official or nonprofit housing advocate can quote statistics clearly demonstraring the severity of the affordable housing shortage afflicting their town, city, county or state. But, on the natinal level, the issue barely gets a mention in the seemingly non-stop series of presidential nomination debates. The next adminstration must have its feet held to the fire to restore the federal government's bipartisan commitment to make decent, affordable housing a basic right of every American household.

Correcting the affordable housing crisis in this country will take strong leadership and a sound national housing policy. Current subsidized federal housing programs are woefully underfunded, and successful programs like the Low Income Housing Tax Credit don't address families, seniors and disabled people with the lowest incomes. Some promising new federal legislation exists, but it will not be a quick or singular solution. Multiple efforts, in Congress, among financial institutions, and in communities are needed to provide capital and opportunity that will form a strong base from which an affordable housing continuum can grow.

There are so many barriers to getting individuals who ae born and raised in this country affordable housing, but the biggest barrier is the greed of the landlord. I have families loosing their homes because they can no longer afford their rent and because incomne does not match what it actually cost to live. To live in a two bedroom apartment paying $1500.00 with nothing included and told you can not afford a home because you can not come up with the down payment, on an avarge income,is insane. Something must change. There is no longer a "society middle class". It is only the rich and the poor.

I have worked in public housing for 15 years, our jobs have and are changing with all the requirements for housing, the aspect of changing to Asset Management will continue to make another change, it is going to make a difference in how we look at prospective tenants and their income, this should be a program for 'low income' people as it was intended, we will have to consider the income we will make under the asset management regulations and incorporate that into our screening for new tenants, this will eventually eliminate the 'low income' families from receiving assistance. There needs to be a change in many of the requlations. If we eliminate all excluded income, the HA's will have a chance of succeding under asset management, but there needs to be a change.

We need to stand up and make the nation's housing crisis a central issue in the presidential campaign. I can't remember the last time I read an article in the KC Star or TV news about local campaign speaches where the word "housing" was even mentioned. Nearly all of the major candidates (and the President)have been in Kansas City addressing the VFW convention. If any of the candidates mentioned housing in their speeches, it certainly wasn't important enough for the Star or local television media to mention. Only numbers (of voters) count folks. We are in desperate need of more affordable housing in this community. Our HRA would like to accumulate more housing, but with all the budget cuts they can not afford to do it. People are working for $5 - $6 an hour and paying well over 30% of their income for rent. It is very difficult to raise a family and provide for them.
I have worked for 22 years with Low Income Families. Time and time again, one of the biggest problems I see is that they do not understand budgeting well. Classes on finances should be mandatory to receive assistance. First Home Buyers have to go through classes to purchase a home, so the same emphases should be placed on rentals.

I see the need for "AFFORDABLE HOUSING" everyday. I work for the State Housing Choice Voucher Program. The need is critical in our area.
The foundation for continued success of our nation is dependent on the ability of citizens to find and sustain safe, decent, and affordable housing for their families. We must remember as a society that we are only as strong as our weakest link. I believe it is a sad testament to a nation such as ours that the majority of the soldiers who defend our country can not afford private decent housing in the areas they are stationed. We must do better as a nation.

The cost of living in getting outrageous. Our waiting list for public housing is anywhere from 1-6 years. We need to support affordable housing. It is a must.

In our community, both the United Way Impact Agenda and the Chamber of Commerce Imagine Anderson in 2020 have listed goals related to the provision of Affordable Housing for our citizens. What will this nation do to support that goal?

Our area continues to be hard-hit by layoffs, downsizing, and closings. Available jobs are becoming more and more "temporary" and short term. Our award-winning program that teaches people how to become self-sufficient is continuously challenged to help people find ways to become self-sufficient home owners. To too many people, the American Dream remains just that -- a dream.
