Sign on to the Housing America 2007 Petition!

More than 70 years ago, this nation committed itself to providing a decent home and suitable living environment for all Americans. To date, this promise has not been fully realized. With renewed public support and enlightened leadership, we are committed to reestablishing this objective as a national priority.

We believe this is a critical national objective that can only be met through an unwavering federal commitment; an ongoing ability on the part of state and local government to fill in the gaps created by the limits of federal assistance; a dedicated, mission-driven not-for-profit community, and a forward-thinking private sector.

Today, 15.6 million households pay more than half of their income for housing; homeless estimates are nearly 750,000. America is the best housed nation on earth, yet for a growing and more economically-diverse number of families, children, seniors and persons with disabilities, affordable housing in quality communities is illusionary. As individuals, organizations, and a nation, we must do more and do better to help those least able to help themselves.

Safe, decent and affordable housing is pivotal in our society—beyond providing basic shelter, it positively impacts the economy and improves the quality of our environment.

Over the years, the public and private sectors have learned much about the cost-effective provision of affordable housing. Together we know what works, what does not work, and why, yet unmet housing needs in our communities persist. Each in our own way, using the resources available to us, we recommit ourselves today to a national goal of meeting the housing needs of all Americans.

To sign on to the petition, please click on "Comments" below and leave a comment with your name, zip code, address and, if you wish, organization. The signers will eventually be compiled into hard copy format and delivered to members of Congress. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Barron at mbarron -at- nahro.org.

I bought my first house 30 years ago and paid $35,000. My son bought his first house this year a few miles away, no bigger, no yard and paid $187,000. His wages are no higher than mine were back then. Something is wrong here.

I practice affordable housing and community development law because as a child I experienced first hand how unsettling it is to be evicted from one's home. I have vivid memories of my mother staying up late at night, pencil in hand, trying to work through what we would do, where we could go, and how we could afford it. Affordable housing is essential for the health and safety of America's families. A renewed federal commitment to housing is essential.

I agree, we need affordable housing for the homeless and people that cannot afford private market rents. For example, I know of single individuals that are working and going to school and cannot afford housing. It would be great if they could find affordable housing so that they can continue their education.

The housing situation is becoming critical - with so many people fooled into taking on mortgages they can't afford, it is not enough to say they should have read the contracts more carefully. We need federal action to regulate the lending industry and incentives for providers of affordable housing.

These are hard times for affordable housing. Families have to wait years to receive rental assistance until their names finally rise to the top of housing authority waiting lists. Other families cannot even put their names on the waiting lists because housing authorities have had to close these lists due to the large number of applicants. When families do receive subsidies, oftentimes there is no suitable housing available in their community. Still other families who have worked long and hard to be able to purchase a home of their own cannot do so because home prices are too high and mortgage loans too hard to secure. Housing agencies, too, are hard-pressed to do their jobs as administrative dollars shrink. It seems that the Housing America Campaign is a good way to begin to address these critical issues.

Keeping this promise is long overdue. Urban Edge is part of a network of CDCs and for profit developers that continue to build housing for all income levels in Boston and surrounding areas, we are not adding enough to the supply of housing affordable to modest income households. This is a promise that is long overdue. Urban Edge is part of a strong network of CDCs and for profit developers that continue to build and preserve housing in Boston and surrounding areas. But we are not adding enough to the supply of housing affordably to housholds with modest incomes. As a result we are adding to sprawl and losing population. The continuing disparity between those that have too much and those that don't have enough is unaccetpable.

Affordable Housing is critical in this market, it is a means to help the poor and median income families gain pride in home ownership; the American dream. Congress often times do not see the faces of the ones being affected; disabled, elderly, children, etc. It is imperative that funds are allocated accordingly and remain so to help in this matter. With the rising of interest rates, high foreclosure ratio and the demise of mortgage programs (that would ordinarily help the low income applicants) Affordable Housing will literally be the only option for home ownership of the majority of families. For Congress to discount this fact, it would only promote a vast rate in homelessness, encourage a drowning market and create more chaos in the economy.

Congress, please use humility and compassion in knowing how this will adversely affect our communities and families.

I for one can testify that affordable housing is needed. I live in public housing and with the amount rent cost these days it helps me alot having four children with out receiving child support and only working one full time job to where I live check to check.
