Sign on to the Housing America 2007 Petition!

More than 70 years ago, this nation committed itself to providing a decent home and suitable living environment for all Americans. To date, this promise has not been fully realized. With renewed public support and enlightened leadership, we are committed to reestablishing this objective as a national priority.

We believe this is a critical national objective that can only be met through an unwavering federal commitment; an ongoing ability on the part of state and local government to fill in the gaps created by the limits of federal assistance; a dedicated, mission-driven not-for-profit community, and a forward-thinking private sector.

Today, 15.6 million households pay more than half of their income for housing; homeless estimates are nearly 750,000. America is the best housed nation on earth, yet for a growing and more economically-diverse number of families, children, seniors and persons with disabilities, affordable housing in quality communities is illusionary. As individuals, organizations, and a nation, we must do more and do better to help those least able to help themselves.

Safe, decent and affordable housing is pivotal in our society—beyond providing basic shelter, it positively impacts the economy and improves the quality of our environment.

Over the years, the public and private sectors have learned much about the cost-effective provision of affordable housing. Together we know what works, what does not work, and why, yet unmet housing needs in our communities persist. Each in our own way, using the resources available to us, we recommit ourselves today to a national goal of meeting the housing needs of all Americans.

To sign on to the petition, please click on "Comments" below and leave a comment with your name, zip code, address and, if you wish, organization. The signers will eventually be compiled into hard copy format and delivered to members of Congress. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Barron at mbarron -at- nahro.org.

The Winchester Housing Authority in Northwest Connecticut had 5 individuals on its waiting list in 2000. Today it has 126. Some will wait years, others will die waiting. Can't we get our pride back by supporting our fellow man? A little bit of housing will go a long way towards dignity.

It is time to renew our nation's commitment to develop and preserve affordable housing for families and elderly individuals of low income. The lack of decent, safe and sanitary housing is shameful. We strongly support the Housing America 2007 Campaign.

The need for housing has reached a critical level as more MIDDLE income families seek assistance in our area, a clear indication of the growing divide between the "working twice as hard but just getting by" and the "uber-rich". Taxes, insurance, and soaring home prices make the "American Dream" a fantasy. We must address this unalienable right of every American to obtain affordable housing.

essential to any community's appeal is how well its citizens live, what quality of life is there beyond Main Street; if the low -income, the working poor have no stability in their home life, their base of operation, if there is no affordable housing from which to establish a stable base of operation, then they are less likely to acces the channels to self-sufficiency because their time and energies are consumed with the struggle for survivial in the most basic needs. As a proud member of NAHRO, the Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI) stands in strong support of the Housing America Petition. For 40 years, CDCLI has been providing services to Long Islanders to help them secure safe and affordable housing to extend participation in the American Dream. As service providers in an area where the stock of affordable housing is small and diminishing, we believe strongly in the need for a multi-pronged approach to addressing this issue. Toward this end, we currently administer rental subsidies through the Housing Choice Voucher program, provide homeownership counseling and residential loans, offer rehabilitation and energy conservation services, and develop new affordable housing units. Affordable housing is essential for strong communities, and we fully support the effort to make this issue a national priority.

Brenda Torpy from Champlain Housing Trust said our state has one of the highest housing wage gaps in the nation and our state and local governments have stepped up to address the need at the local level, but we cannot make up for the federal government's retreat from this arena. We need a return to sound and appropriately funded federal housing processes for both urban and rural America.

As we hear the sad news about the future of our children we have to wonder if their diminished desire to stay in school and do well is tied to their lack of access to a safe and sound home. I strongly think so. A child that is hurting because we have lost our urgency to give their caregivers access to affordable housing is a child that will be limp his way through school. We must renew our commitment and take care of our own. Home IS where the heart is and everything else falls in place when that home is accessible. The American Dream is about having the courage to speak for those that have no voice. Betty Flores, Former Mayor of Laredo, Texas.

The American Dream has fallen by the wayside as McMansions fill our country and SUVs drive over the backs of the underserved and shrinking middle class. Perhaps raising the amount a renter can deduct for rent on the federal tax return would alleviate some of the pressure on low-income households. Initiatives to develop more Section 8 housing should also be encouraged. Clean, comfortable, affordable housing for everyone must remain a national priority.

During this 70th anniversary of the signing of the Housing Act of 1937, it's no coincidence that it occurs in conjunction with the Labor Day holiday. Only when wages are once again tied to the cost of housing will we see significant strides made towards affordable housing for all Americans. Until that time, public housing remains the only affordable answer and often the only barrier to homelessness allowed to the poor and near-poor, whose numbers are growing every day. We NEED to get the Presidential candidates talking about this issue! It's THAT important, because without affordable homes to reside in, we can all say goodbye to the American Dream.

As a social worker that has lived, and currently works for public housing I know how critical it is to have housing that is affordable for low income individuals and families. A large percentage of the population we serve is single parent homes and people with disabilities. These factors alone will inhibit their ability to afford decent housing. We need to focus our attention on keeping this nation strong by taking care of those that are limited in resources. It is not by their choice as many would assume that have never been in their situations. Many of our own employee's wages qualify them for assistance!

Housing is a Basic Need. Day after Day we see the families torn apart as families struggle to work with minimum wage rather than a work wage to find enough money to provide their housing needs. Housing Authorities can help but there is a lack of affordable housing available.

We would like the housing funds restored to 100% to help those families who are in need.

Every child should have a decent, safe and sanitary home so they can concentrate on growing and becoming productive as members of our future.

Where would you be without a house, an address, a place to bathe, a place to eat, a place to sleep? Lets put faces on dollars so we can understand the impact of what the reduction of dollars does in our communities.

I know of a person living in a run down home in Christian County, Missouri, that has a leaking roof. His kids contacted OACAC to see if they could fix his roof. OACAC does not do that kind of repair work. We are grateful for what they do to help winterize homes. Where does a poor person go to get help with housing repairs? There are critical and negative comments about homeless people, but how do the government expect them to be able to afford housing, when they can't even get proper care from Medicaid, little alone the high prices of rent? With no credit history or bad credit history because of bad luck in their life, whether it be health problems or losing their job, etc., how can they be expected to be able to buy a house? It just doesn't happen. We need more affordable house in decent areas that are safe for people who can not afford the high prices of renting. Now people on disability are going to lose from from their monthly disability pay, because Blunt is taking money from the monthly checks to pay for Medicaid premiums. What is our state and country coming to when the rich politicians keep making the poor poorer and poorer, and the rich politicians, in turn, keep getting richer and richer by increasing their salaries while hurting the poor with their legislation? What is wrong with the government people who live in big fancy homes and get big fat paychecks, but continually hurt the poor when they go to work everyday by cutting social security disability and medicaid benefits for the poor!?!?!? How are they suppose to go out there and pay the prices for rent to have a decent place to live? Where's your empathy for the poor, Blunt?!? To put it BLUNTLY, do you just want the poor to shrivel up and die, because they can't afford to live properly and safely anymore with safe and secure homes and good medical care?!?!?

With the cost of housing now and the ability to compete with others has gone way up. It is a very difficult time for people to find affordable housing. I work at Social Services in Calif. to help people to whom are homeless and seniors and it is getting harder nad harder to help them. We are moving into the period that the baby boomers are going to be seniors and they are going to be having a harder time finding housing if They only have SSI.
