Sign on to the Housing America 2007 Petition!

More than 70 years ago, this nation committed itself to providing a decent home and suitable living environment for all Americans. To date, this promise has not been fully realized. With renewed public support and enlightened leadership, we are committed to reestablishing this objective as a national priority.

We believe this is a critical national objective that can only be met through an unwavering federal commitment; an ongoing ability on the part of state and local government to fill in the gaps created by the limits of federal assistance; a dedicated, mission-driven not-for-profit community, and a forward-thinking private sector.

Today, 15.6 million households pay more than half of their income for housing; homeless estimates are nearly 750,000. America is the best housed nation on earth, yet for a growing and more economically-diverse number of families, children, seniors and persons with disabilities, affordable housing in quality communities is illusionary. As individuals, organizations, and a nation, we must do more and do better to help those least able to help themselves.

Safe, decent and affordable housing is pivotal in our society—beyond providing basic shelter, it positively impacts the economy and improves the quality of our environment.

Over the years, the public and private sectors have learned much about the cost-effective provision of affordable housing. Together we know what works, what does not work, and why, yet unmet housing needs in our communities persist. Each in our own way, using the resources available to us, we recommit ourselves today to a national goal of meeting the housing needs of all Americans.

To sign on to the petition, please click on "Comments" below and leave a comment with your name, zip code, address and, if you wish, organization. The signers will eventually be compiled into hard copy format and delivered to members of Congress. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Barron at mbarron -at- nahro.org.

Lithonia Housing Authority, Lithonia, Georgia. Affodable Housing is so scare it is shocking. This is the richest country in the world.Homeless-
ness is at it highest peak. Homeownership is no longer affordable and more than 50% of renter households pay more than 30% of their income for rent. We need the help of congress, private industry and all of housing industry to increase affordable housing opportunities for all. We encourage congress to renew its committment to housing providers and increase our funding to revitalize existing housing stock, to broaden the opportunities for homeowership and to increase funding for Public and Indian Housing and the Housing Choice Voucher Program and the HOME Programs and to end homelessness.

One day each of us may need affordable housing or find ourselves in a situation where we can't afford housing at all - don't assume your current lifestyle is set in stone - we all deserve a safe, affordable, clean place to live and raise our children - no one is exempt!

I live in New York City. The rent guideleines board has raised the rent for regulated apartments at least 3% every year for the past 10 years without considering rates of inflation or wage-earning fluctuation. If you lived in the same apartment for 10 years and started out paying $1,000, your rent is now approximately $1,425-- for the same apartment without any substantial improvements-- a 70% increase compared to a nearly 40% increase in salary. The average net salary increase nationally is less than 2%, not even close to keeping up with rents. There have been working tenants in my building that were forced to move out of their apartments because they were unable to keep up. There has been a spiraling cost of renting and buying that has favored landlords for too long now. The marketplace needs to be regulated if people, ordinary working people, can find decent places to live.
